Yao and colleagues introduced Tree of Thoughts as a research framework in 2023 to move language models beyond single linear reasoning. It applies search and evaluation from problem solving to generated thought units.
Instead of one road there is a search tree: each node is an intermediate state, branches are possible next thoughts, and evaluation prunes unpromising paths. Search ends when a viable solution path remains.
