The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is the open-source umbrella organization for cloud-native projects, governance, and certifications.
CNCF was founded in 2015 as a subsidiary of the Linux Foundation to coordinate and sustain cloud-native open source software over the long term. The announcement came alongside Kubernetes 1.0; Google had previously contributed Kubernetes to the Linux Foundation as seed technology. From that starting point, CNCF became a neutral structure for projects, governance, and shared infrastructure.
Think of CNCF as a neutral support layer across a project ecosystem. The Technical Oversight Committee guides technical direction, while the Governing Board handles budget and organizational oversight. Projects move through maturity levels such as Sandbox, Incubating, and Graduated; alongside that, CNCF provides conformance programs, community services, and infrastructure so projects can grow interoperably.
