Cytoscape.js is a lightweight JavaScript library for visualizing and analyzing graphs and networks in web applications. It provides rendering, layout algorithms, interaction, and extensibility for large topologies. Developers use it to build interactive network diagrams, dependency maps, and bioinformatics visualizations in client-side environments.

Cytoscape.js is a lightweight JavaScript library for interactive graph and network visualization and analysis in the browser.
Cytoscape.js was developed at the Donnelly Centre at the University of Toronto and is the successor to Cytoscape Web. It began as a way to let complex networks be visualized and operated directly in the client instead of only being computed on the web. From that starting point, it grew into an open graph library with rendering, layouts, an event model, and analysis functions.
Think of Cytoscape.js as a runtime environment for networks in the browser. A graph instance holds nodes, edges, and attributes. Layouts compute spatial arrangement, stylesheets separate data from presentation, and events connect selection, zoom, drag-and-drop, and other user actions to the application. The same structure can also run headlessly for analysis.
The runtime representation bundles nodes, edges, and their properties into an editable network.
A layout arranges elements so that structure, groups, and relationships become visible.
Presentation rules separate visual design from the actual graph data.
Clicks, selection, zoom, and dragging make the graph directly interactive.
The library can also be used without visible rendering for analysis and server-side processing.
Cytoscape.js is useful for interactive network diagrams, dependency maps, and biological networks in the browser. It is strongest when layout, selection, styling, and interaction need to work closely together. For very large topologies, data modeling, performance, and layout choice remain important constraints; for freely composed, non-graph-centered visuals, a more general tool may be a better fit.
