Where does it come from?

Ansible grew from the practical need to manage IT systems consistently without bespoke remote-access logic or a permanently running agent on each target. Its documentation continues this approach in an open community through declarative playbooks and modules.

The mental model

An inventory describes target systems and their groups. A playbook assigns roles and tasks to them; modules perform individual changes and report their state. Variables adapt the same workflow to different environments, while idempotence limits repeated runs to the desired state.
